My Better 'N' Eggs coupon in hand, I went to a large grocery store and purchased a carton of the liquid egg replacement. At the checkout counter the bar code of my coupon was scanned, and the discount automatically deducted. Most large grocery stores across the country have these new machines, saving the checkout person from having to manually deduct the thirty five cents.

Suddenly concerned, I found an assistant manager at the store and quizzed him. Have these computers caused little old ladies who might have an exired coupon to lose their discount. Unfortunately, yes, he said. "I'd like to, but I can't. The new machines won't let us. They scan the coupon, if it's expired, it won't go through." Try going to a mom and pop though: "I bet at those smaller stores, where they don't have the automatic machines, they would let an old lady through."
